A calm heart rate made it easier to navigate these insane obstacles. Probably part of the psychotic test that Ryker had developed. That last part of the obstacle course had been about a two mile run, so her heart pounded in her chest. Looking out at the woods, she took a moment to catch her breath. But as she stepped out onto the first log section, the stupid thing swayed dramatically and she pulled back. Thankfully, there was a rope along both sides of the obstacle so she could hold on and, hopefully, maintain her balance. “Ryker, you must have a demented mind if you think this kind of thing is fun!” she muttered to herself. That meant that each section moved separately! It wasn’t just one log, but a huge log that had been cut into several pieces, each piece hung by two ropes. “I can do this!” But staring at the logs that had been hung from the trees, Carly wasn’t so sure. “No broken necks,” she said with absolute determination as she looked out in front of her. Was a neck a bone? No, it was a series of bones, she told herself. So, Carly climbed the rope ladder and hooked on her tether, the safety precaution that she knew Ryker had installed to ensure that anyone falling off wouldn’t hit the ground and break anything. “I’m not giving in!” she muttered, squelching the thought. If she walked around one, why couldn’t she walk around all of them? Glancing towards the next obstacle, then the next and…well, beyond those two, she couldn’t see the next one since it was hidden in the trees. Darn it, she really hated heights!Ĭarly considered walking around this one. Her determination wobbled slightly, but Carly wasn’t giving in. She paused for a moment, frowning at the scratch on her hand, then back at the log, glaring at the obnoxious thing. Carly stumbled, but quickly regained her balance. “Harder!” she whispered to herself as she jumped over a log that she’d only seen at the last moment. It stung, but the pain helped in an odd way. Not exactly how the holiday song goes, but Carly couldn’t seem to get it out of her head.Ĭarly pushed herself harder, ignoring the scratch on the palm of her hand. I know it's the unpopular opinion to prefer Island to Desert, but there are my reasons. So I'm considering selling Desert because I just don't feel like playing it again if I don't think I can win it. My wife isn't much of a gamer and she doesn't enjoy it, and I played it this weekend with some other people and we lost (again fairly early on). This may mean that you spend the first half of the game not finding anything, but still having to deal with the sand piling up and sun beats down cards which then make the second half of the game much harder In Island you know where everything is from the get go, but in Desert you have to uncover all of the relevant sections. I think part of this difficulty comes down to the randomness of set up. I got both as something that I could play with my wife, first Island and then Desert after we enjoyed Island, but after one play she thinks Desert is stupid because we lost quite early on of thirst. However, I've played Desert about 5 times (both with others and on my own trying to win it playing as two people) always on novice and still not won it once yet. I know that I can win Island, and that I just need to adjust the difficulty if I want a harder game. I've had games with one person 'running' back to the pad as the tiles behind him keep sinking - feeling like a scene in a movieĭifficulty - For some this is a big negative for Island compared to Desert, but for me it's the opposite way round. Whether you win or lose watching the island sink around you whilst trying to make it back to the landing pad just feels far more tense than pulling out a card and just finding that you've all died of thirst. Theme - Personally I prefer the theme of being on a sinking island than being stuck in the desertĮnding/Losing - For me Island has a better ending. I'm aware that that isn't generally the agreed position, but that's my opinion.
